Tackling the Property Tax Crisis

I’m working hard in Topeka to win the property tax fight that is harming Shawnee families — and making too many of us feel we are renting our homes from the government.

Property tax rates are controlled by local governments, including K-12 schools, counties, cities, and community colleges, usually elected in low turnout elections. But the state can and must empower Kansans with stronger tools to fight runaway increases.

Fix the Appraisal System: Our state constitution currently prevents the Legislature from fixing the broken appraisal system fueling skyrocketing valuations. You deserve the opportunity to vote on constitutional reforms that bring fairness and accountability.

Real Local Levy Limits: “Truth in Taxation” hearings have improved transparency, but taxpayers still have too little power to stop excessive increases. This session, I supported stronger taxpayer protections, including tools like protest petitions to challenge unreasonable hikes.

Make Appraisers Accountable: Many states elect county appraisers and have lower tax burdens. Just like sheriffs and district attorneys, appraisers should answer directly to the people they serve.

With big annual property tax increases, seniors are being forced from lifelong homes, and young families can’t even get started.

That’s why I back robust reform that empowers the people. Together, we are taking on career politicians and the special interests that benefit from the status quo.

I’m not backing down and will keep you posted on our progress.
